Think Like a Winner

John Cena

My wife and I were de-cluttering the basement yesterday and I came across a piece of paper in an old briefcase.

Here’s what it said:

Think Like a Winner!

When you change your thinking, you change your beliefs;

When you change your beliefs, you change your expectations;

When you change your expectations, you change your attitude;

When you change your attitude, you change your behavior;

When you change your behavior, you change your performance;

When you change your performance, you change your life!

I challenge you to take a look at where you’re at today and compare that to where you’d like to be.  Then…make the changes necessary to get there!

Whether it’s a diet or exercise plan, improving your time-management skills,  or working on building a better relationship with someone, improvement can only come through change.

Three Words for 2012

Happy New Year !!!

Since 2006, Chris Brogan has challenged his followers to skip the New Year’s Resolution making.  Instead, he proposes we all come up with three words for the new year.

This year, I took him up on the challenge.  And, much to my surprise, he included my three words in his blog post.  How cool is that?

My Three Words for 2012

Plan – set goals.  Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually.

Focus – imagine wild success and visualize the outcome.  Work with that in mind and stay on track to get there.

Follow-through – don’t get sidetracked by the bright, shiny things that tease and taunt you.

And You?

What are your three words for the new year?

Yes: I Would Like to be Happier 7 Days a Week!

I saw this at Walmart yesterday and snapped a photo with my phone.

This is definitely on my list.

Holiday Time is Reflection Time for Me

‘Tis the season for reflection.

Thinking about the greatest gift that mankind has ever received.  Two-thousand years ago.  In a lowly stable, God delivered to the world a Savior.  A Savior that would save the world from sin.  A Savior that would give grace to those who believe.  And everlasting life.  I am so very thankful for my relationship with Jesus Christ.

While I am far, far, far from perfect, I hold tight to the thought that God loves me just the way I am.  And…by following his leadership, I will become a better person.  A better husband, father, employee, boss and friend.

My family went to see “Let It Be” at Granger Community Church this past Thursday.  It was amazing.  Spectacular. And thought-provoking.  How could music from the Beatles be made into a Christmas program?  I wish you could have seen it.

Then last night, my wife and I saw the production of A Christmas Carol at the Lerner Theater.  That, too, was amazing.  The talent of local men and women and children flooded the stage.  It was a fantastic show.  And a thought-proving show.  It reminded me of what is truly important in life.   It’s not about money or fame.  It’s about how you live.  It’s about “do unto others as you’d have them do unto you”.

Today is a New Day: Make the Most of It!

Wherever you’re headed today, make the most of it.

Here are three things to do today:

Smile.

Be genuine.

Encourage someone.

What’s All This Talk About the Paleo (Caveman) Diet?

A Diet Plan for Everyone

There are lots and lots of diet/food plans out there.  And…they all pretty much work; assuming you follow them to a “T”.  There’s Weight Watchers, The Atkins Diet, NutriSystem, Jenny Craig, The South Beach Diet, and probably a hundred more.  I’ve done the Weight Watchers program and had some success with it.  I also tried NutriSystem and failed miserably.  And it was VERY expensive too.

My Success on the Paleo Diet

I’m currently following a ‘modified’ Paleo Diet.  I say ‘modified’ because to truly be on the Paleo Diet, I would need to eat organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed (as opposed to grain-fed) beef, and avoid all types of legumes (beans and peanuts),  and vinegar.  So perhaps I’m really following a hybrid diet where it’s high in protein (mostly chicken, pork and eggs) and ultra-low in carbohydrates.

My diet also includes fresh fruit like apples, oranges and bananas.    Another no-no on the Paleo plan is salt:  which is okay by me, since I’m not supposed to eat salt anyhow.   I’ve had border-line high blood pressure in the past and am currently taking a low dose of Lisinopril to keep it in check.

Vinegar?  I only use a splash of it in my homemade salad dressing.  [Olive oil + vinegar + garlic paste + Dijon mustard + black pepper].

Weight Loss?  You Bet!

Since starting my Paleo food plan back in late August, 2010, I’ve lost almost 35 pounds and I’ve not gained it back. Oh sure, I do the typical up-and-down thing with my weight, but no more than two or three pounds over the past several weeks.  My energy level is the highest it’s been in a LONG time.  I’ve also taken up running and that has really helped with the weight loss/maintenance too.  I don’t run every day and I haven’t gotten to the ‘long run’ phase yet, but every time I lace up my running shoes and get outside, I feel so much better.  Even if I don’t reach my goal of, let’s say, ‘non-stop running for one mile’:  I still feel So.  Much.  Better.

Run Forrest, Run!

Last week I ran during one of my lunch hours.  [Confession:  that was the first time I ran (or walked) since January.  Yes, it’s been that long.  And shame on me for that.]  It was a perfect day for running:  sunny and about 55 degrees.  There’s an asphalt road that encircles the building I work in.  From out the door to back in the door, it’s almost one mile.  I did two.  I did the walk-run-walk-run-walk routine.  It felt SO good to be outside with sunshine on my face and my ear buds stuck in my head.  It was glorious.  I’m going to do it again this week!

Make Good Choices. Take Control. Gain Success.

Make Good Choices

Make the most of your life.  One minute at a time.

Forget about yesterday.  Don’t worry about tomorrow.  Focus on now:    This day.  This hour.   This moment.  It’s the ONLY thing you have control over.

Speaking of control, YOU HAVE CONTROL of your thoughts, right?  So…it’s up to you to decide what you allow into your head.  Will you fill it with good, positive, uplifting thoughts?  Or will you allow the daily grind to wear you down and let the self-pity, negative ‘I hate myself’ talk to take over?

Use your best judgment.  Make the best choice for the moment.

You can choose to focus on the negative.  But where will that take you?  Answer:  further down the negative path.

Avoid the Pity Party

I tell you all of this because I have “been there” and “done that”.  Honestly, I’m very good at self-destructive thoughts.  And self-pity?  I could teach an advanced level class on that subject.  So…I’m not pretending to be any better than you.  But here’s the thing.  Like you, I am smart enough to know that no one is standing over me with a sledge hammer beating thoughts into my head.

Oh yes, Madison Avenue tries their damndest to influence me and you.  But there again, we have a CHOICE whether or not to allow their slick advertising gimmicks to persuade us.

Become Your Own Advertising Agency

Did you know that you have your own version of Madison Avenue in your head?  It’s true:  you sell yourself on ideas all day long.  Why not make those ideas work for you and not against you?  Why not fill your head with positive thoughts?

Tell yourself that if you want to be a runner you have to lace up your shoes and run.  Or at least walk.  If you want to start going to the gym to work out, then give yourself the pep-talk that you need to pack your gym bag and get on the bus or get in the car and GO!

Positive Thoughts + Action = Success

If your plan is to eat healthier foods, then do some research, make a shopping list and go to the food store.  Stay away from the crap; buy only what’s on your list.  When you get home, unpack your fruits and vegetables and wash them.  Cut them up.  Put them in containers.  Make them handy so when it’s time to eat, or you need a snack, you are PREPARED.  Boil some eggs or poach some boneless, skinless chicken breasts while you’re prepping your fruits and veggies.  I’m not a big fan of multi-tasking at work, but when I cook, it makes perfect sense.

Now :   you have good choices available to you.  There’s no need to put your hand in a bag of BBQ potato chips or grab a handful of cookies when you have celery, carrots, green peppers, cherry tomatoes, apples, oranges, bananas and pears to choose from.

Are You Getting This?

Persuade yourself that you’re in control (because you are).  Remind yourself that life will continue to throw you all kinds of twists and turns — but stay true to your goals and make GOOD choices.  How do you do this?  You can literally talk to yourself (out loud) and tell yourself that you’re going to do the right thing.

You can put positive thoughts on sticky notes and cover your bathroom mirror with them.  You can let some of your friends in on your plan and ask them for their support.  You will, in time, catch yourself thinking negative thoughts.  That’s major progress!

You just need to catch yourself quickly and TURN THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AROUND.  Instead of “I don’t give a shit, I’m going to eat a dish of ice cream.” You should say, “I’m on a quest to eat healthy.  I’m not going to let my negative mood sabotage my plan.   I’m going to have a ¼ cup of vanilla yogurt with a teaspoon of sugar-free strawberry jam on top.” (It’s excellent by the way!)

Become a Cheerleader for “Team-Me”

Always make your self-talk positive in nature.  And…congratulate yourself on making good choices.  That’s not cheesy, people, that’s being SMART.

The Take-Away

Don’t let a bad moment become a bad day.  Don’t let a bad day turn into a bad week.  It’s SO easy to get sucked into the negative vortex.  Remember:

  1. You’re in charge of YOU.
  2. Make good choices.
  3. Be Strong.  Stay Strong.

This Month is Marching By Quickly!

Got a Clue?

So, what have you accomplished this month?  Any closer to those goals you created?

Have you lost those unwanted pounds?  Read all those books on your ‘must-read’ list?  Cleaned out your over-stuffed closet?  Changed the oil in your car?   Balanced your checkbook like you promised you would?

Got a Plan?

Your mind was created to THINK OF (not store) ideas, goals and tasks.  So…rather than keep your brain engaged in all that energy trying to remember and recall, why not grab a pen and a piece of paper and WRITE DOWN all the things you need to do?  Create a GOAL LIST.  It doesn’t have to be fancy.  A spiral notebook is a cheap and easy way to get started.  Heck…you  can begin the process on the back of an envelope or a cocktail napkin.  Format IS. NOT. IMPORTANT.  Content is the important stuff.

Got Success?

Of Manifestos and the Like

I’m in the process of writing a personal manifesto.   And in doing my research on other manifestos, I came across this one:

Click on the image for a larger version.

I absolutely LOVE this.  Such wonderful advice.  You can buy a poster-size version or a pack of five (5) greeting cards here.  Or visit the the great folks at Holstee and see what other great things they have to share.

Oh, and here’s another (shorter) manifesto-ish list from Chris Brogan.  I like it.  A lot.
